Rise of the Seapony by SpyroConspirator Rise of the Seapony by SpyroConspirator
A commission for :iconjakonen-san:'s fanfic "Fallout Equestria: Dark Shores" ([link])
This was interesting to do, because I actually did more painting than I did line or ink work.
As a side note, I now have an intense hatred for sand and sea water in real life. Stupid hard to draw things... *grumble grumble* It was interesting, though, and I got to experiment with some different techniques.

(you can view the really high-res version by clicking "download," if you're that sort of person) (;P)

Nice, this one just needs some more attention than it gets.

Thanks =)  Although this one kind of bugs me to look at now... I don't know what I was thinking with the black outlines around everything and trying to mix the big black inkblot shading with the painting-style shading.  Plus the head looks goofy, and the ear... lol, I tend to get really negative with all my old things, don't mind me!  It was definitely a fun one to do (can't believe it was almost two years ago now!)

Its a good sign of how much you've improved then, and a moment to smile still at that. You know so much more. So look to the happier message?

Oh definitely.  I tend to take the position that I should never be too happy with my things, 'cause it means I'm not noticing the bad stuff, and that's no good!  So I definitely get satisfaction from being able to see where I've improved, and what mistakes I can shake my head at now.

Ask Jakonen-san for permission, he commissioned it for his fanfic. I don't think he's using it anymore, though, so I doubt he'll mind. Sorry for being slow to reply.

Well whaddaya know I thought I had come up with something original, because I thought of a similiar thing a couple days ago while I was in the sauna and I just drew it a little while ago now.
I did come up with an original name but mehh, I still only came up with something someone had alrady thought of...
like this piece of art a lot though

Thank you. =) And don't worry to much about not coming up with 'something original.' Human creativity is a process of building off of other people's ideas, and most things are already thought of them. It's 99% the details we put into the idea, and how we execute it.
It's always annoying when that happens, though, isn't it? I did that the other day too, with a drawing idea I had for one of the mane 6... grr.
Anyways, glad you liked the pic! ^^

Yeah I know. I always keep telling myself that pretty much all the things that could be original were thought of LOOOOONG ago and that inventions and ideas these days are just new mixes with all the stuff we already know so when you think you've thought of something completely new that NO ONE has thought of most likely someone has thought of it, if not exactly in the same way then in a similiar way at least. XD
And yeah it's really awesome. You're welcome.

I was actually thinking of this while I was drawing it. I haven't read the fic, so he might address the issue, but my head cannon is basically that seaponies are amphibious. It's developed the necessary organs to breath in air, but it's anatomy still doesn't allow for particularly strong motor skills. Likely, "Riptide" here will be consumed by a predator for his precociousness, before climate conditions have a critically negative effect on his systems.
Although it does seem unlikely that a community of amphibious creatures would live in such a haline-rich environment, I suppose its possible. According to the Bulletin of Marine Science, vol. 8, there are at least 52 species or subspecies of amphibians that dwell in or occasionally invade saltwater areas. Perhaps a more likely scenario, however, is that the recent magical apocalypse has caused an intense desalination on certain parts of the oceans. The nuclear winter would cause much of the sea water to turn to ice, which would be an extreme form of the natural desalination that can be observed in our own oceans.
It's also possible that he's a sort of amphibious fish, such as the Rockskipper or the Woolly Sculpin. In this case, it probably won't have too much of a problem with motor skills, as these types of creatures have been shown to be surprisingly effective at using fins and tails to scoot/tripod walk/jump around. In this case, you're probably right, unless ol' Riptide intends to return shortly. He probably has at least a day, though.
Anyways, I like your line of thinking.

Huh, I didn't know that there were such specific guidelines for the terminology... I have to stick with the names/anatomy given to me by the fanfic's author, but I'll definitely keep that in mind if I do another piece like this.
And thank you! ^^

Oh, it's supposed to be a bandolier o' knives. The parts that kinda look like bullets are the grips. The blades are immediately adjacent and above, although upon further inspection, they might not stand out as much due to my black/white values.

Glorious work on Riptide. The water and sand look good. The only real critique I could really think of would be that the sky in the background looks rather flat. You may wish to consider adding clouds, with the sizes shrinking as they get closer towards the horizon.

Another tip is the horizon line itself. If the line drawn is removed and you allow the reflections and colors themselves draw the line, The human eye will do the work for you in making the horizon.

You did an amazing job, keep up the good work.

Thanks, I'm glad you like it. I was afraid the sky might be too flat... I might try adding a gradient to try and help that. I experimented a bit with clouds early on, and it just seemed to make the composition too messy. I'm sure there's something I could've done, though (maybe if I made it low-contrast enough). As for the horizon line, I'll take it out and see how it looks. I just assumed I should add the black line since I outlined most things in the piece. Thanks for the tips =)

This is a pleasant surprise. Not 6 days after putting up the Frosty Winds commission.

Excellent artwork or Riptide, Dark Shores is a very likeable story and this is a great portrayal of the main character. I like how you've made Riptide look, especially his hair and that confident smirk he has on his face. I especially like how you made his body look and I like Riptide's weapons held in his magical grip. Nice work on his clothing, I look forward to future chapters.
